LENDAL TOWER - SCHEDULED ANCIENT MONUMENT LENDAL BRIDGE, YORK
SUMMARY Under extremely stringent conditions to prevent damage to the fabric of an ancient monument and to preserve the look of Lendal tower, works were undertaken in conjunction with Yorkshire Water to prevent further flooding outside York Boat.
A diving team was employed to undertake the underwater removal of an existing freshwater inlet from the River Ouse. Cellars were tanked and mass filled with lean design mix concrete to ensure easier access by archaeologists at a future date. Lendal Bridge and Dame Judi Dench Walk were fitted with specialist flood barrier defences. Barriers were sited on reinforced concrete foundations , designed to withstand flood water loadings, and are erected when flood warnings are posted. All works were carried out under the supervision of York Archaeological Trust and English Heritage.
Project value £250,000
